History

2010 — Where It Began

A Shared Experience
DeAndrea and Remi met at Emory University as part of a class of ~65 physical therapy students—only about 10 identified as Black.

Even then, the conversations had already started:
What would it look like to build something for us?

2013 — The Seed Is Planted

Beyond Graduation
After graduating, the idea didn’t fade—it grew.

We began exploring what it would take to build an organization that truly serves the Black physical therapy community.

2016–2018 — Building the Foundation

From Idea to Intention
We became intentional.

Over two years, we:

Defined our mission and vision •
Built our brand identity (name, logo, colors) •
Structured the organization from the ground up •
Connected with others who believed in the vision •

2018 — The First Moment

Community Made Real
Washington, D.C. | Twin Jazz

Our first event marked the shift from vision to reality.
For the first time, the community came together in a shared space.

2018–2020 — Strengthening the Structure

Leadership + Expansion
We expanded our leadership team and built the foundation:

Defined roles, values, and responsibilities •
Secured early sponsorships and scholarships •
Built a leadership team reflecting diverse experiences and perspectives •

Because to serve our community fully, our leadership had to reflect it.

2020 — A Turning Point

Growth + Adaptation
We grew from ~100 members to 700+ contacts across:

• Prospective students
• Current students
• Licensed professionals

We adapted quickly:

• Hosted virtual conferences
• Built digital engagement
• Maintained consistent connection

2020–Present — Building with Intention

Sustainable Growth
We chose not to rush.

Instead, we focused on:

What truly resonates with our community •
How to build something that lasts •
Expanding beyond traditional models •

Today — More Than a Network

A Movement
NABPT has evolved into more than an organization.

It is a movement grounded in:

• Purpose
• Community
• Collective expertise

Because when we lead with intention and shared vision, we don’t just build—we build something that lasts.
